Ethiopia has a long history of cotton cultivation, textile production and handweaving, with textile knowledge passed through generations. Cotton connects agriculture to craftsmanship.

From Fiber to Thread
After harvest, cotton is cleaned and prepared before spinning. Loose fiber becomes something strong enough to weave — the first transformation in the journey.
03 · Enzert
The Art of Spinning
Traditional spinning transforms prepared cotton into thread. Patience, skill, coordination and experience turn something soft and unstructured into a continuous strand — one strand at a time.
04 · Thread
Many Threads. One Fabric.
A single thread is small. Thousands of threads can become cloth. Many threads create one fabric; many people create one community.
05 · The loom
Where Thread Becomes Cloth
Skilled weavers work with rhythm, precision and experience to transform thread into handwoven cotton fabric. Thread becomes loom-work; loom-work becomes shemma.
06 · Shemma
The Foundation of the Garment
Shemma — also written shema — is traditional handwoven cotton cloth used in Ethiopian clothing traditions. It is valued for its natural feel, lightness, breathability and handcrafted quality.
07 · Tibeb / Tilet
Patterns That Tell a Story
Tibeb or tilet is the decorative border that gives the garment distinctive visual character. Geometric, floral, symbolic and repeating patterns vary by artisan, region, tradition and style. The pattern is part of the garment's visual language.
08 · The Kemis
From Cloth to Celebration
The finished Kemis is associated with Ethiopian cultural identity, celebrations and special occasions. Traditional handwoven cotton and decorative borders now meet new silhouettes, colors, fabrics and personal expression.
